At the end of June 2010, we had a solar generator fitted to the south-facing aspect of our roof. The generator is made up of 24 photovoltaic panels which replaced the original tiles.
The installers estimate that we could get about 2400 kWh of electricity per year - of course, there are many factors which affect this amount – principally the amount of sunlight.
There is a ‘Feed In Tariff’ subsidy for homeowners generating their own electricity. Under this scheme, homeowners are paid for electricity generated - whether it's fed into the grid or not. Additionally, our energy suppliers will pay a further, small, subsidy for energy which is fed into the grid.
It is all very early days for this set up, but we shall continue to report to OTT on our progress, costs and benefits, as the installation settles down and we adjust to having ‘free’ supplies during daylight hours.
