Warning: There are a number of companies (British Gas is one) that will rent you roof from you and install the panels for free. You get any saving on your electricity bill, and they get the feed in tariff. For some people this may be fine, but what happens when you sell the house? The roof is “owned” by the company. Would this cause complications with mortgage providers?

P.S.

You can also install solar water heaters. These collect heat from the sun and transfer it to the hot water tank. There are various types, and you need a hot water tank with two coils, so that could be an extra cost if you have a conventional one. The overall cost is £3000 - £4000 depending on the system chosen. Several people in the Oundle area have these and I can put you in touch with them if you are interested.

You will get effectively free hot water from around April – Sept, and it will boost the temperature in the winter months so that the boiler has less work to do.

About one quarter of the normal annual heating/hot water cost is in providing hot water, so you can estimate the possible savings on you gas/oil bill. But the systems do not help with central heating. A renewable heat tariff and a Green Deal are proposed by the Government, but details are not yet clear.
